Globengalan, one of the world’s leading athletics meetings, will not take place in 2017. The meeting has been arranged annually since 1990 and no fewer than 18 world records and 35 Swedish records have been broken over the years. This year’s event in mid-February had no title sponsor, and it is a continuing uncertain financial situation which has led the organisers, athletics clubs, Hässelby SK och Spårvägens FK, to cancel the competition in 2017.
The meeting last winter, which was the 27th in a row, was a great success from an athletics perspective but at the same time put a strain on the organisers’ funds, and to continue to run the event at such a cost would jeopardise the clubs’ activities for children, youth and senior elite.
Last winter Globengalan was one of four meetings in the newly launched IAAF World Indoor Tour, which meant that Stockholm was the only city in the world to stage both an indoor and outdoor athletics meeting at the highest international level. That the meeting is without a main sponsor for the second year running is the reason for this decision but the organising clubs have not ruled out a return and, together with the Swedish Athletics Federation and other stakeholders, they will consider possibilities for Stockholm to once again arrange a world class indoor athletics competition in the near future.
